VISIT NANCY / METZ

SéparateurPhoto of the cities of Nancy and Metz

Make the most of your long weekend to discover Nancy, Metz, and the Grand-Est region.

Nancy, the former capital of the Dukes of Lorraine, captivates visitors with its elegance and exceptional heritage. Its famous Place Stanislas—a UNESCO World Heritage site along with the Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance—is an 18th-century jewel, featuring Jean Lamour’s gilded iron gates, ornate fountains, and the City Hall. Nancy is also the French capital of Art Nouveau and the birthplace of the École de Nancy, founded by Émile Gallé alongside artists like Majorelle, Daum, and Prouvé. You can admire facades adorned with floral motifs, the Villa Majorelle, the Excelsior brasserie, and the Musée de l’École de Nancy. When it comes to gastronomy, enjoy quiche lorraine, pâté lorrain, and potée, not to mention local sweets like Nancy macarons, bergamots, mirabelle plums, and Commercy madeleines. For wine lovers, Côtes de Toul (vin gris) and Lorraine wines are the perfect accompaniment to these specialties, as is the local tradition of beer. Between its museums, parks like La Pépinière, and the lively atmosphere of the Old Town, Nancy offers a refined and delicious getaway that is not to be missed.

Metz, a city of art and history in the heart of Lorraine, surprises visitors with the richness of its heritage. Its Saint-Étienne Cathedral, nicknamed the "Lantern of the Good Lord," houses over 6,500 square meters of stained glass, including works by Chagall and Jacques Villon—a true marvel of light. The Imperial Quarter, built during the German era with its neo-Romanesque train station and grand avenues, contrasts with the historic center, its medieval alleys, the arcaded Place Saint-Louis, and the Temple Neuf along the Moselle River. On the modern side, the Centre Pompidou-Metz, with its Chinese hat-shaped roof, stands out as one of France's major contemporary art museums. The city is also very green, with the Jardin de l’Esplanade, the lake, and the banks of the Moselle. As for gastronomy, savor quiche lorraine, pâté lorrain, and potée, as well as mirabelle plum tart—a true local emblem—and Moselle wines like Pinot Gris or Auxerrois from the Metz region. The vibrant Christmas markets round out this cultural and culinary stopover.
